Instruction manual for patients and caregivers of Hospital at Home program
This project is academically sponsored by UCMC in the fall semester of 2022 at the Institute of Design
Improving the Hospital at Home program's patient and caregiver experience by communicating the correct information.
Our team was assigned to design and produce the instruction manual. In the group, I was responsible for information sorting, illustration, visual design, and prototyping.
Throughout the course, the entire class delivered at the end with an Introduction pamphlet, Introduction video, Hospital at Home Information kits, Informative booklet, Instruction manual, and Care at Home checklist.
UCMC is preparing to launch the Hospital-at-Home program, planned to allow particular patients who qualify to receive hospital-level care at home and achieve better treatment outcomes.
The scenarios in which patients will be exposed to the Hospital-at-Home program are in the emergency department and at home. Moreover, most patients are over 65 years old, so we needed to think about communicating the information in a simple, direct, and easy-to-understand way.
In terms of the Instruction manual, our design contains several hierarchies:
1. A preview of the overall equipment and its description.
2. The ecosystem of the whole program.
3. Detailed instruction manual for each specific device.
Through step-by-step illustrations and simple language, it is easier for older patients to use.
We prototyped the design and delivered it to UCMC for patient testing. Our design achieved very positive results. According to our instruction manual, the patients knew very clearly what the H@H monitoring kit is and how to use it. Patients were able to follow the instructions and use the various monitoring devices very seamlessly.
